„Yadh represents a new stream within Tunisian contemporary experimental music. [...] (He) is one of the undeniable talents of the Tunisian scene.“
    Asma Ridane, Le Renouveau
Oud player and composer Yadh Elyes was born in 1978 in La Medina, Tunis and studied in Tunisia and Belgium. His contemporary compositions combine both oriental and jazz traditions in a distinctive fusion, revealing the specificity and remarkable qualities of the Oud, (Arabian lute) traditionally used in North African and Middle Eastern music, and his own special passion for this instrument. Formative collaborations with musicians such as Belgian pianist Nathalie Loriers, clarinettist Gianluigi Trovesi Joêl Allouche (Percussion) und Tony Overwater (contrabass and electric Viola da Gamba), gave rise to an unusual synergy of Oriental-Meditative music and Jazz, a line of investigation, which Elyes continues in his latest work today. Elyes’s recent experimental contemporary works continue to draw on the mystical and meditative universe arising from the Sufi tradition, blended with contemporary Jazz and ambient sound. His distinctive and unusual compositions combined with the warm tenor of the Oud and the extraordinary sensitivity of expression, which Elyes demonstrates when playing, deliver an experience that touches and connects at a profound level. Yadh Elyes has played with renowned musiciens such as Tony Overwater, Philippe Aerts, Jean Luis Rassinfoss, Philip Catherine, Fawzi Chekili, Pierre Vaiana, Gian Luigi Trovesi Jo Kaiat, Joel Allouche, Nathalie Loriers, Wajdi Cherif, Arbi Sassi, Aziz Jammam, Ramon Lopez, Dietrich Eichmann, and Garrett Listll. He has toured and performed in Belgium, Germany, France, Malta, Spain, Poland, Africa, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Notable projects and collaborations include "Chemins Croisés" (2004) and “Histoire de Coeur” (2005 )

Nine improvisations over continuous, calm Ujjayi breathing compose a musical journey originating in the breath - the very root of music, and its most intimate source. This journey explores rich and secret pathways that weave through diverse sound- universes. Each musician improvises freely to the slow rhythm of the Ujjayi cycles, accompanying the listener in his explorations.
Practicing Ujjayi respiration in synchronicity with the recordings will enable one to more fully experience the wonders of this sound-journey. (DSA)
